All About Sammy

Sammy was only six years old, but his unique personality, infectious laugh, smiling eyes and energy for life will be a memory we all hold in our hearts forever. To say he was brave, determined, and adventurous would be an understatement. He was all the above and so much more. His knack and ability for climbing trees, or anything for that matter, was his trademark. We can only imagine how high the trees are that he gets to swing from in heaven.

His love for sports came instinctively, he was a natural athlete. Hockey, softball, baseball, ball hockey, he loved them all. Not only playing but being with his friends and he had so many. We all know he is making new friends and playing sports in heaven. Heaven has gained an all-star.

Sammy had a distinctive charm and would say the funniest things. His love for his family and friends knew no bounds. He loved everyone and everyone loved him. Most people in this world will have lived their entire lives and will never touch the hearts of as many people as Sammy was able to touch in his 6 years,

Sammy made an everlasting impact on us all. In his short life here on earth he taught us all to be braver, to be adventurous, to be determined, and of course to be kind. We are all just so lucky to have had the time we did have with him. As much as we needed him here with us, heaven needed him a little more.

Sammy’s Foundation

Brave, Determined, Adventurous and Kind, these are just some of the words used to describe Sam (Sammy) Porter. On July 17, 2022, the world lost Sammy. While he was only 6 years old his unique personality, infectious laugh, smiling eyes and energy for life will be a memory we keep in our hearts forever. Sammy was known for his knack and ability for climbing trees, or anything for that matter, it was his trade mark. His love for sports came instinctively, he was a natural athlete. So in his memory, Sammy’s Climb Higher Foundation has been created. A not for profit dedicated to helping the members of our community in the sports and recreation sector.

Sammy’s Climb Higher Foundation will work to provide funding to families who struggle to enroll children in sports/recreation/arts organizations and to community groups that require recreational equipment upgrades. Sammy often questioned why some children were unable to play sports, in his own words “that’s not fair”.

While some families can afford to pay their bills, they cannot afford the extras like sports for their children. Sammy wanted everyone to play so the hope of the foundation is to help all those who struggle, not just low income. Sammy wanted to ensure that everyone had a chance to play with less barriers, whether that be on a playground or through a sport.

Foundation Name

After a rather long list of contenders, our name was chosen by Sammy’s big brother Aiden. A very important part, chosen without hesitation to honour his little brother.

For those of you who did not know Sam, to say he was a climber would be an understatement! Sammy climbed everything, walls, couches, monkey bars, trees, you name it, and he could climb it! From the age of 6 months old and on, climbing was his specialty.

As much as Sammy loved climbing, his desire to help others climb and be included was even bigger! Sammy had a heart of gold and did not want anyone left out. So, to honour Sammy, the purpose of his foundation is to help other children participate in a sport or activity that they otherwise might not be able to do.

We believe every child has the potential to “climb higher” when given the opportunity, and with a little helping hand, we can make it happen thanks to Sammy!
